Swarthmore Holds Off Fords

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Seniors Linday Roth, Katie Crawford, and Athena Samaras combined to score nine of  Swarthmore's 13 goals in their final game to help the Garnet defeat rival Haverford 13-9 in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon on Clothier Field.

Roth tallied a game-high four goals, while Crawford added a hat trick and Samaras scored a pair. Sophomore midfielder Anna de Regt also scored two goals while junior defender Megan Sanborn handed out two assists.

Swarthmore (10-7, 3-5 CC) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and led at the half 7-3. Haverford (6-9, 1-8 CC) scored twice to open the second half, and again after Samaras' first goal of the day to bring the Fords within two with 24:55 remaining in the game.  The Garnet then went on a three-goal run, as Crawford, Samaras and Roth each scored to solidify the lead.

Swarthmore goalkeeper Susannah Blair '08 recorded 11 saves in net.  Sophomore defender Melissa Grigsby picked up six ground balls to go along with a team-high six draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Roth's four goals give her 127 in her career, ranking eighth all-time in goals scored at Swarthmore.

Swarthmore completes the 2007 schedule on Monday, April 23 with a 5:15 game at Bryn Mawr.
