Roth, Garnet Send Pioneers Packing

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  -- Swarthmore midfielder Lindsay Roth '07 tallied five goals and added an assist, and Annda de Regt '09, Marissa Schaffer '09, and Athena Samaras '07 each recorded three goals as the Garnet rolled past the visiting Pioneers 18-9 in non-conference women's lacrosse action Thursday night.

Swarthmore (8-6, 1-4 CC) used an eight-goal run in the first half and a five-goal run in the second half to overwhelm Widener (3-7, 2-4 MAC) who could not match the Garnet's offensive output.

The goals came fast and furious in the first half.  The Pioneers put up the first two markers, unassisted scores by Grace Cavanaugh and Alison Glavin.

The Garnet quickly took control, rattling off eight consecutive scores to assume an 8-2 lead with 10:14 left in the first half.  Roth tallied three of the scores while de Regt picked up a pair of scores.  Senior captain Katie Crawford capped the run with her 15th goal of the season.

Cavanaugh and Glavin each scored again before the first half was over, shrinking the Swarthmore lead to 11-5 at half.

Cavanaugh scored her third goal of the evening just 45 seconds into the second half, and after Schaffer scored just under a minute and a half later, Glavin scored again. Swarthmore provided all the offense in the next ten minutes, scoring five unanswered goals to put the Pioneers away for good.

Roth's five goal performance is a career best and gives her 115 scores for her career overall, putting her in 11th place all-time in goals scored.

Sophomore defenseman Melissa Grigsby secured seven draw controls for Swarthmore, and also picked up a team-high five ground balls.

Swarthmore will be on the road for the next two games, both crucial Centennial contests.  The Garnet travel to Allentown, Pa. on Saturday, April 14 to face Muhlenberg College at 1:00 p.m., and then saunter up to the Main Line on Tuesday, April 17 to take on the Bryn Mawr Owls.
