#12 Shoremen Wash Away Garnet
CHESTERTOWN, Md. -- Washington senior midfielder Mike Hughes had four points while junior attackman Kolyn Kirby contributed a goal and two assists as the 12th-ranked Shoremen handed Swarthmore a 12-4 defeat in Centennial men's lacrosse action Wednesday night.
Swarthmore got scores from sophomore David DiSimone, freshman attackman Tyler Bradshaw, senior midfielder Gavin Nurick and freshman Anthony Phalen.
The Garnet jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. DeSimone notched his first goal of the season at 10:09 off a feed from freshman attack Gavin Musynske. Garnet midfielder Adam Miller '08 won the ensuing face off and Bradshaw scored an unassisted goal at 8:10.
The Shoremen quickly answered, getting goals from junior attack Chris Read (assisted by Hughes), Kirby and sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek (assisted by Kirby), to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period.
Washington (9-3 overall, 4-2 CC) kept the offense rolling in the second period, scoring four times to take a 7-2 into halftime. Senior midfielder Mike O'Hara tallied back-to-back goals while Hughes added a score at 3:44 off Kirby's second assist.
Washington put up three scores in the third period; Andrew Genezario scored an extra-man goal for the Shoremen at 11:31, Will Fletcher scored off a pass from Genezario and Hughes tallied an unassisted score with 48 seconds left to build a 10-2 advantage.
The Garnet (4-5 overall, 2-4 CC) matched the hometown team goal-for-goal in the fourth period, getting unassisted scores from Nurick and Phalen. It was the first collegiate score for Phalen.
Swarthmore starting goalie Frank Mazzucco made seven saves while freshman Kevin Friedenburg saw his first action of the season, making one stop in just under 13 minutes of action.
The Shoremen controlled the face offs, winning 17 of 19 and out-shot Swarthmore 27-13.
Swarthmore continues the toughest stretch of their schedule when they travel north to face non-conference opponent Drew University on April 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Garnet will then play its second nationally-ranked opponent in three games, hosting third-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday, April 21 at 3:00 p.m.
