Young Triples Up, Garnet Fall To Mules
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Sophomore midfielder Ben Young tallied his second career hat trick, but it was not enough as Swarthmore (3-3. 2-2 CC) fell to Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg 9-6 Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action on Clothier Field.
Muhlenberg midfielder Sean Toohill led the Mules' attack with three goals and two assists, and fellow midfielder Andrew Lolley recorded three points on two goals and one assist.
Attack Kyle Wilson '09 scored his team-leading ninth and tenth goals of the year, and attack Tyler Bradshaw '10 also had a goal, his sixth of the year, to round out the scoring for the Garnet. Midfielder Gavin Nurick '07 had Swarthmore's lone assist on Young's first goal.
Muhlenberg (5-3, 1-3 CC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Wilson put the Garnet on the board with 6:14 remaining in the first half. Wilson scored his second goal just over five minutes later to shrink the Mules' lead to just one at halftime.
The visiting team came out with a surge in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals before Young ended the drought with his first goal with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter. Bradshaw's goal, which came on an impressive shot that he was able to get off with a defender right in his face, was sandwiched between two Muhlenberg goals early in the fourth. Young's back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter pulled the Garnet within two with 3:14 remaining in the game before Muhlenberg's Tim Dwyre iced the win with a goal with 1:34 left.
Mules goalkeeper Andrew Bell stifled the Garnet attack, coming up huge on a number of point-blank Swarthmore shots on his way to seven saves. Swarthmore goalkeeper Frank Mazzuco '08 recorded 13 saves in the losing effort while defender Dan Sartori '08 picked up eight ground balls.
Swarthmore's next game will be Tuesday April 3 at 7:00 vs. non-conference opponent St. Mary's (MD), a contest that will be played on Clothier Field.
