Miller Earns All-America Nod
HOUSTON, Tex. -- Swarthmore freshman Anne Miller broke three school records and earned All-America status at the 2007 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Houston this past weekend.
Miller earned All-America status in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events, becoming the 16th Swarthmore swimmer to achieve the distinction. The Garnet had 12 All-American swimmers in the 1990s, the last being Ted Sherer '01 in 2000. The last Swarthmore female swimmer to make All-America was Claire Arbour '00--she qualified in three events in 1997. Miller is also just the fifth Swarthmore swimmer to make the top-eight in an individual event, joining Robert McKinstry '75, Skye Fulkerson '96, Jill Belding and Sherer.
Miller opened the Championships by breaking a 10-year old school record in the 500 freestyle on Thursday afternoon, swimming to 28th place with a time of 5:11.31. Miller bested the time set by Arbour in 1997 (5:13.08).
On Friday morning, Miller swam 16th in the 100 fly pre-liminary and then picked up 15th place in the finals, breaking her own 100 fly record with a time of 57.92 (her old mark was 58.21).
Saturday saw more success for Miller as she qualified for the 200 butterfly championship finals with the sixth-best time (2:06.08). This time broke the previous Swarthmore record of 2:08.33 set by All-American Jill Belding '99 in 1996. Miller was stellar in the final event, taking fifth place (the best individual finish ever for a Swarthmore swimmer at nationals) with a time of 2:04.44, lowering her school record once again.
Miller now owns a part of five school records and picked up three gold medals plus a bronze at the 2007 Centennial Conference Championships.
