Swarthmore Tracks Down NYU

MATCH RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa.-- The Garnet men's tennis team faced its first Division III opponent of the season, rolling to an 8-1 win over visiting New York University Saturday afternoon in the Michael Mullan Tennis Center.

The Swarthmore men (1-2) made a clean sweep of the doubles' competition.  Senior Jon Reiss and junior Jon Lo dispatched of NYU's Mikail Gurevich and Brett Levin 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, Kevin Shaughnessy '09 and Brian Nailitt '10 rolled past Craig Berger and Zubair Ghouse 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Sam Sidhu '07 and Mark Greenburg '09 made quick work of the Violets' P.J. Marranca and Greg Werbowsky at No. 3 by a score of 8-2 as well.

Reiss picked up his second straight win by cruising past Gurevich 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles' match.  Swarthmore senior Adam Wallwork picked his first win of the spring at No. 3, defeating Berger 6-2, 6-2 while Nailitt notched his second win of the spring by taking down Ghouse 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. 

Shaughnessy overcame Marranca is marathon super-set, picking up the victory at No. 5 by a score of 6-0, 1-6, 12-10.  England rounded out the afternoon with first win of the spring, topping Werbowsky 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.

The Garnet, by virtue of their performance in the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships, will see their next action at the 2007 National Indoor Championships at Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) on Feb. 23-25.
