Swarthmore Doubles Pair Wins on Final Day of ITA Small College Championships
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Swarthmore seniors Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent concluded participation in the doubles competition at the 2006 ITA National Small College Championships - the duo won one of their two matches on the final day to claim sixth place.
By winning the Southeast Regional at the end of September, Reynolds and Sargent earn All-American status for the 2006-07 season. The duo are the first Swarthmore women to earn the distiction in doubles competition. Reynolds was also an All-American for singles play in 2004-05.
Reynolds and Sargent began the second day of competition with an exciting victory over Stephanie Hammond and Lisa Steckmest of Claremont-Mudd Scripps. The Garnet women cruised through the first set 6-0 and then the Athenas came back with a 6-2 win in the second set. Swarthmore then outlasted the CMS women in the final superset, 12-10, to advance into the fifth place match.
In the fifth-place match, Reynolds and Sargent met up with College of New Jersey's Jackie Shtemberg and Christina Contrafatto. The Garnet pair won the first set 7-6 (3) but the Lions claimed the final two sets 6-2 and 10-7 to take the match.
The ITA Nationals are the final competition for the Swarthmore women's tennis team in the fall season - the Garnet will open the spring session with a home match against New York University at 12:00 p.m. on February 24.
