Baseball: Shoremen Exact Revenge, Down Garnet
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington (Md.) College broke open the second game of a home-and-home with Swarthmore on Friday afternoon, scoring nine runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 16-3 Centennial victory. Swarthmore drops to 6-14 overall and 1-9 in the CC while the Shoremen improve to 7-18 overall and 2-8 in the CC.
Swarthmore and Washington split the season series for the third consecutive season; the Garnet won 9-8 at Clothier Fields on April 11 on a two-out game-winning single by sophomore catcher Andy Bender. The Garnet hold a slight 33-32 edge over the Shoremen dating back to 1962.
Garnet junior outfielder Ian Adelstein went 2-for-4 with a double while sophomore outfielder Scott Dalane also collected two hits while scoring a run. Adelstein has gotten two hits in each of the last three conference games to raise his Centennial-slugging percentage to a team-leading .457.
Swarthmore junior Alex Ryan-Bond (1-6) took the loss while Yoi Tibbets '09 and Conor Casey '09 came on in relief. It was the first collegiate appearance for Casey and the freshman pitched well, allowing only one hit in two innings while striking out one.
The Garnet cut Washington's early 3-0 lead down to a single run after scoring twice in the top of the second. Freshman Kevin Kooi laced a two-out single, scoring junior Noah Cooper-Harris and junior infielder Sam Faeder followed with a base hit of his own to plate Dalane.
The other Swarthmore run came in the third when sophomore Patrick Christmas scored as Cooper-Harris grounded into a double play.
Senior captain Scott Young swiped second base in the seventh inning, giving him 15 steals in 2006. That is the most stolen bases by a Garnet ball player since Ryan Pannorfi '04 collected 10 in 2004. Young is now 22 for 24 (91.6%) in his college career on the base paths.
Washington's Kirk Hines (1-4) picked up his first victory of the season, striking out three batters in eight innings of work. Shoremen Zach Huba and Eric Guetterman led the offense with a combined 10 hits, seven runs, and seven RBIs.
Swarthmore returns home on Saturday, April 15 to face off with Centennial rival Dickinson in a 12:30 doubleheader.
