Shorewomen Bake Garnet 2-1
Washington (Md.) scored twice in the second half to upend Swarthmore 2-1 on Thursday evening at Clothier Field. The Shorewomen improve to 6-10 overall and 5-4 in the Centennial while the Garnet slip to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the Centennial.
Not five minutes into the game, forward Heidi Fieselmann '06 put Swarthmore on the board with her 12th goal of the season. Midfielder Abbie Fischer '08 rushed in for an inspired steal from the Washington defense and followed up with a beautiful passa across the goal mouth. Fieselmann easily one-timed the ball infor the score at 31:29.
A few minutes into the second half, Washington's Rachel Miller barreled her way through the Garnet defense and scored to tie the game 1-1. Miller fought past several Garnet defenders, falling to her knees in front of the Swarthmore cage. She managed to sneak the ball past Garnet goalie Karen Lorang '07 at 29:09.
The Shorewomen took the lead with 17:32 remaining, coming away with the ball as the Washington offense bombarded Lorang with shots. Melanie Rupert finally put the fifth shot into the back of the net. Lorang put up a heroic effort, making four stops, but in the end the Washington melee proved too much.
Lorang made 11 saves in goal for Swarthmore.
The Garnet conclude their 2005 regular season schedule in Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday, October 27. Swarthmore will face F&M at 1:00 p.m.
