Garnet Cut Down by #16 Gettysburg
Sarah Latta scored with 11 minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift 16th-ranked Gettysburg over Swarthmore 3-2 in the Centennial Conference opener for both squads on Saturday in Gettysburg, Pa.
Latta gathered a deflected shot from the top of the Swarthmore arc on a Gettysburg penalty corner and netted the game-winner.
The match was the 2005 Centennial Conference opener for both squads. Swarthmore hit the board first as Summer Spicer '07 finished off a pass from Jessica Larson '06 at 20:25. It was the sixth goal of the season for Spicer.
Gettysburg (5-3, 1-0) fought back to tie the game with 52 seconds remaining in the first half as Krissy Browning tied the score off an assist from Maura Downey.
The Garnet went ahead with 18 minutes left in the game, as Charlotte MacAusland '06 scored off a set-up by defender Julie Monaghan '07 on a penalty corner. Once again the Bullets came back with a goal; Maura Downey scored at 14:02 to knot the score at 2-2 and the scored stood like that until Latta set everyone home in the second extra period
Swarthmore goalie Karen Lorang '07 was brilliant in the cage, recording a career-high 27 saves as the Garnet fell to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial.
The Garnet resume Centennial play when they host Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5:00 p.m.
