Garnet Compete at ITA Southeast Regionals
Swarthmore College's Sonya Reynolds '07 advanced to the third round of Championship Draw Singles at the ITA Southeast Regionals this weekend at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. Eight Garnet women made the trip, with three doubles' entries and eight singles' entries.
Reynolds, seeded No. 2, defeated Priya Puri 6-1, 6-1 in her first round match, then advanced past Jenny Smith 6-0, 7-5 in the second round. Reynolds' tournament was ended upruptly in the third round when Katie Tabb won a close match 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
The junior responded in the doubles' draw, pairing with classmate Marissa Matthews to win three straight matches. The duo advanced all the way to the semi-finals before falling to top-seeded Emily Applegate and Kristen McClung 8-4.
Erica Lukoski '08 fell to Muhlenberg's Jennifer Powell 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in her Championship Singles Draw, yet rallied in the Consolation bracket to defeat Kayla Carter 8-6 before falling to No. 10 seed Stephanie Kurti from Mary Washington 8-2. Freshman Jennie Park also fell in her first-round Championship Singles Draw, falling to fourth-seeded Kristen McClung 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. Park came back to win three matches in the Consolation bracket, including an upset of Kurti in the Consolation quarters.
Lukoski and Park made a splash in the Championship doubles' draw, winning two matches before falling to No. 3 seed Lee Weston and Ginny Wortham. Jenna Adelberg '06 and Emily Townsend '07 fell in their first-round doubles' Championship match, but ran off three straight victories (including two that went to tie-breakers) to reach the finals. The pair dropped the final match 8-0 to Mai Otsuka and Alison Liu.
Jamie Midyette '08 won a tough first-round match in the Championship draw, defeating Haverford's Allyson Scherb 3-6, 7-6(9), 7-5 before falling in round two to No. 13 seed Amy Sheetz. Townsend and Matthews both dropped their first-round matches, with Townsend winning two Consolation matched before falling in the quarterfinals.
Adelberg and Marissa Lee '09 competed in the Blue Singles Draw with Adelberg winning her first-round pairing 6-4, 6-4 over Brittany Stevens before falling to Alice Yull in round two by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Lee was defeated in her first round match by eventual winner Torri Christmas, but ran off five straight wins to win the Consolation bracket.
