Swarthmore Takes Down W. Chester JV
The Garnet outshot the junior varsity squad of Division I West Chester, 21-12, on their way to a 3-2 victory on Thursday evening.
Julie Monaghan '07 put Swarthmore on the board with an unassisted goal with just 3:20 left in the first half. Goalie Melissa LaVan '07 made the lead stand up into the intermission with four first-half saves.
The Lady Golden Rams evened things up with a goal just over three and half minutes into the half. The combination of Sharna Shuford to Emily Kunkel teamed up for the first of two goals by Kunkel to even the score, 1-1.
Swarthmore continued to pepper West Chester goalie Brittney Harding, newly inserted in the second half. Charlotte MacAusland '06 rang up s score off a feed from Neema Patel '07, with 12:45 left to put the Garnet back in the lead.
Kunkel answered again for the Lady Rams, finishing off a pash from Shuford to knot the match at 2-2 with 6:40 remaining.
The will of Swarthmore would not be denied. Heidi Fieselmann '06 found an open teammate, classmate Jessie Whitfield '06, who nailed home the game-winner with 5:10 left.
LaVan totaled six saves on the evening for Swarthmore.
The Garnet hit the road again tomorrow, travelling to Wellesley College for the annual Seven Sisters Tournament this coming weekend. Swarthmore will face Mt. Holyoke on in their first round game at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
