Academic Tech Fair – Highlights

The Spring 2008 Academic Technology Fair had something for everyone, especially our three iPod raffle winners. Crowds gathered throughout the day at our eight tables filled with gadgets, widgets and multimedia displays. Lots of interesting conversations came up as faculty and staff shared their ideas and experiences with technology for teaching, research and collaboration. Time for QuickTime Updates (and more)

Late last week, Apple released some security fixes for its QuickTime application so users (any platform) should update to the latest version (7.4.5) as soon as they can. This latest update fixes eleven assorted security vulnerabilities. Users who have QuickTime configured to check for updates automatically just need to enable the installation. Otherwise the update can be found at: http://www.apple.com/support/quicktime/ While on the topic of application updates, it’d be worthwhile to verify your current versions of Adobe Acrobat, Firefox, Opera, OS X, etc. against the most recent versions available. Media Services facilitates a videoconference w/ the University of Hong Kong

On Wednesday night, March 19, Media Services facilitated an hour long, high bandwidth videoconference between the Sociology & Anthropology department at Swarthmore College and the Sociology department at the University of Hong Kong. Participants were able to see and hear each other in a full screen, natural setting using a high bandwidth 384 kbps conference connection over the Internet. Swarthmore Media Services rolled out is brand new Tandberg Edge 85 conference unit with a high definition camera, and a 42″ Sony plasma monitor. McAfee SiteAdvisor Makes Safe Surfing Easier

McAfee SiteAdvisor is now bundled with Swarthmore McAfee Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware Version 8.5 for Windows PCs. You’ll know that SiteAdvisor is running on your PC if you notice an icon like the following on your Internet Explorer (shown) and/or Firefox browser: SiteAdvisor visually indicates whether a web site you’re visiting has been determined to be safe or otherwise. Mail Server Upgrade

The mail server upgrade has been completed and ITS is working on two remaining issues: Some people are having problems sending email from off campus when using an email client such as; Eudora, Outlook or Thunderbird. If you are having a problem with outgoing messages please use Swatmail, our web interface for sending and receiving email.
