Make Your Voice Heard: Vote For The Top Swarthmore Athletics Moment of 2009-10

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – It certainly was a year to remember for Swarthmore Athletics: seven playoff teams, three All-Americans, 11 first-team Centennial Conference members, six Centennial gold medalists and one national champion and American record holder. With the 2009-10 season officially in the rear view, the Swarthmore College Department of Athletics has decided to let the fans vote on the top Swarthmore Athletics moment of the past year.

Throughout the month of June, fans will be able to vote for their favorite Swarthmore moments via the poll at the bottom of the page. Lasting from June 2 to June 15, the current poll features 12 of top moments from the 2009-10 season selected by the Swarthmore Department of Athletics. On June 16, the list of 12 will be narrowed down to five, with the five events receiving the most votes moving to a final poll, which will last from June 16 to June 30. On July 1, the top Swarthmore Athletics event of the 2009-10 season will be announced.

Garnet Soccer Teams Host Haiti Earthquake Relief Clinic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College men’s and women’s soccer programs collaborated to host the Haiti Earthquake Relief Clinic on Saturday, March 20th at the College’s Clothier Field Stadium. The idea for the clinic, conceived by the two teams in order to benefit the victims of the January 12th Haiti Earthquake, was inspired in part by junior Philippe Celestin, a Swarthmore soccer player of Haitian descent. The clinic was a student-athlete-organized venture, with over 30 men’s and women’s players contributing to its organization and execution.

Swarthmore College Garnet Mens Soccer Hosts 8th Annual Benefit Youth Clinic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College Garnet men’s soccer team hosted its 8th annual benefit youth soccer clinic on Saturday, January 30th, raising over $600 for the relief agency Genocide Intervention Network (www.genocideintervention.net). In addition to learning basic skills, such as passing, dribbling, and defending, over 40 children had a chance to play matches against each other during the two-hour clinic. Members of Swarthmore STAND, G. I. Net’s student-spokespeople at the College, also briefed the children and their parents about the terrible humanitarian situation in Darfur, Sudan.

Four Swarthmore Student-Athletes Named Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area

PHILADELPHIA — Swarthmore College student-athletes David D’Annunzio ’12 (men’s soccer), Gina Grubb ’10 (field hockey), Julia Luongo ’10 (women’s soccer) and Brett McLarney ’12 (men’s soccer) have all been selected as Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Stars for their respective sports, the paper announced on Sunday.

Langley, Rose Named NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Junior forward Morgan Langley and sophomore midfielder Micah Rose of the Swarthmore College men’s soccer team have been named to the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region team, the organization announced on Friday. Langley is a second-team selection, while Rose was named to the third team.

Swarthmore Ousted From NCAA Tournament by Transylvania in Shootout

PITTSBURGH – Junior Gage Newman scored the game-tying goal against Transylvania (15-3-2) in the 85th minute of play to send the game into overtime at 1-1, but Swarthmore’s (16-2-3) quest for an appearance in the NCAA Division III men’s soccer Final Four was halted when the Garnet fell to the Pioneers 4-1 in penalty kicks.

Junior Philippe Celestin, Swarthmore Soccer Featured in Philadelphia Inquirer

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Philippe Celestin and No. 7 Swarthmore College men’s soccer team were the subject of a feature story in Thursday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. The story focuses on the balancing act that Celestin – who scored the Garnet’s game-winning goal on Sunday and performed a stomp music piece at the College’s Rhythm and Motion performance the previous day – and many Swarthmore students face on a dialy basis, as well as the recent success of the men’s soccer team.

Swarthmore Athletes Named to the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team

LANCASTER, Pa. – Six Swarthmore student-athletes were named to the fall All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team today. The Centennial’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee created the team to emphasize sportsmanship within the Conference. All institutions elected one member from their team who displays good sportsmanship throughout the season to be a member of the All-Centennial team.

Garnet Sports Network: NCAA Round 2 Highlights; Swarthmore vs Hobart

Down 1-0 with less than 5 minutes to go in the game and possibly Swarthmore’s season, Morgan Langley powers through a defender and rips a shot into the back of the net to send it into overtime. Then in the second overtime, Philippe Celestin sprints down the field untouched, jukes two defenders and blasts the game-winning goal past Hobart keeper in the 107th minute to advance the Garnet to the NCAA Sweet 16.
