Seniors Shine as Garnet Women Defeat F&M 4-0; Peterson Sets Assist Mark
Swarthmore dominated the offense throughout the game, outshooting the Diplomats by a 23-6 margin. The first half could have been framed as a farewell party for the soon-to-be Garnet alumnae playing their final collegiate game, as all the scoring in the first 45 minutes of play was thanks to the class of 2011. In the 15th minute, senior Hannah Purkey’s third goal of the year, assisted by fellow senior Peterson, put the Garnet up 1-0.
Peterson's 15th career assist puts her in sole possession of first place on the women's soccer all-time career assists list. Peterson had tied the record previously held by E.B. Fortier '02 earlier this season before breaking it with a beautiful feed to classmate Purkey.
Three minutes later, Kelsey Cline put a header into the net off a pass from senior Laura Bolger, and as halftime rolled around the Garnet found itself with a 2-0 advantage.
The Garnet kept the pressure on in the second half, as Brock scored her second and third goals of the year to put the finishing touches on a freshman season in which she started 12 games. Her first of the day, a shot off a rebound in the 49th minute, stretched the lead to 3-0, and her second, a kick from the left side of the box that evaded the arms of the Diplomat goalie, capped the scoring on the day.
In goal for the Garnet, junior Marie Mutryn played the first 71 minutes and recorded three saves, while sophomore Beth Martin closed it out with 18 scoreless.
