McMinn, Phillips Pace Garnet Men to Fourth-Place Finish at Centennials
ELKRIDGE, Md. - Sophomores John McMinn and Jacob Phillips crossed the finish line in 21st and 22nd-place respectively (25:57.80 and 25.58.30), leading the Swarthmore College men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon.
The fourth-place finish is a two-spot improvement for the Garnet, which came in sixth last season, and the highest for the program since 2006 (4th).
McMinn was the Garnet's top finisher for the second-consecutive season and just missed a Top 20 performance. Crossing less than a second later was Phillips, who came in 22nd.
In his Conference debut, freshman Robert Fain earned a Top 30 finish, completing the cross in a time 26:12 for 29th place.
Rounding out the scoring for the Garnet was a pack of four runners that finished in places 45 through 48. Sophomore Bill King led the quadrant with a time of 27:00.00. He was followed by Chris Wickham (27.01), Patrick Hartnett (27:06), Richard Scott (27:08.00).
Haverford captured the team title with 23 points, while Dickinson placed second with 39 points and host Johns Hopkins with 95. The Garnet (134) and Gettysburg (140) completed the top five team finishers.
