F&M Drops Field Hockey in Season-Finale, 3-1

LANCASTER, Pa. - Senior Sophia Agathis scored her fifth goal of the year in Saturday afternoon’s contest against Franklin & Marshall, but it was not enough to spark the offense as the Garnet (6-12, 3-7) dropped its final game of the 2010 season to the Diplomats by a 3-1 score at F&M’s Tylus Field.

Swarthmore matched the Diplomats (10-7, 5-5) shot for shot in the first fifteen minutes of play, with sophomore Katie Teleky, senior Hadley Roach, and senior Devon Novatnak all putting shots on goal before either team managed to find the net.  The Diplomats broke through and took the upper hand in the 15th minute, however, on sophomore Chelsey Talhelm’s fourth of the year.  The Garnet offense struggled for the remainder of the first half, managing just one more shot on goal before the 35 minute mark while a 29thminute goal from F&M sophomore Kristen Dublin put the Diplomats up by two at the half.

Just six minutes into the second half, the Garnet made it a game again on of Agathis' goal, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Unfortunately, that goal was the only offensive damage that Swarthmore could manage, as the Diplomats quickly answered with a 42nd minute goal of their own to regain the two-score advantage. Agathis put two shots on goal in the 54th minute, but saves by senior Diplomat goalie Sarah Dileo kept the Garnet off the board for the remainder of the game.

In goal for the Garnet, senior Katie Ashmore recorded seven saves in her final game for Swarthmore.  Ashmore finishes the season with a career high in saves, with 116 on the year.

The Garnet’s six wins marks the most that a Swarthmore squad has recorded since 2007, and its three Conference wins tie for the most since 2006.
