Field Hockey Closes Out Home Campaign With Loss to Haverford
Swarthmore, Pa. - Playing her final game at Clothier Field Stadium, senior Sophia Ferguson scored a late second-half goal for the Swarthmore College field hockey team (6-11, 3-6), but visiting Haverford scored four goals in each half en route to the 8-1 victory over the Garnet on a wet Wednesday afternoon.
Leading the Haverford attack was Mary Hobbs, who had an excellent all-around game, scoring four goals and adding an assist to lead the Fords to the win.
Haverford jumped on the Garnet from the get-go, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes of play. Ahead 4-0 heading into the second half, the Fords added four more, inlcuding the fourth and final goal of the game from Hobbs to close out the scoring.
Ferguson's goal came in the 67th minute, thanks to an assist from freshman Nia Jones on the right wing. The goal is Fergusons' ninth of the season, which leads the squad.
In net for Swarthmore, senior Katie Ashmore made seven saves while seeing constant pressure, while freshman Gabriella Capone made a save in 25 minutes of action.
Swarthmore wraps up the 2010 season with a trip to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Action is slated for noon.
