Swat Women Drop Nailbiter to Haverford 1-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore women's soccer team (7-7-2, 5-4 CC) played gutsy soccer from start to finish but a first half goal by the Haverford Fords (11-5, 6-3 CC) would be enough to edge the Garnet in the heated rivalry game Tuesday night on Clothier Field.
The Swat seniors would show true leadership in the game combining for 12 shots in the game. Two of senior Hannah Purkey's came in the final 15 minutes of play and would just miss as the Ford's net-minder would get just enough hand on it to force the ball wide for corner kicks.
Senior Megan Colombo played beautiful soccer, creating multiple scoring opportunities from nothing and blasted six shots in the game.
Senior Kirsten Peterson would have a shot almost identical to her spectacular goal in Saturday's game against Gettysburg but once again would be refuted by the Haverford keeper.
Although the Garnet would walk away with the loss, Swarthmore would control the pace of the game and dominate the Ford up front, out shooting Haverford 20-9 with 11 of those shots on goal.
After going down 1-0 at half, Swarthmore would turn it on in the second half firing 11 of its 20 shots, six of those on net.
The Garnet offense would do all it could, playing down to the final whistle with a shot that almost made its way over the Ford's keeper to tie the game up before being cleared out to end the game.
Play was controlled by defense as both teams were stubborn in the backfield. Swarthmore allowed only two shots on goal for 84 minutes of play.
Haverford's goal would come off the foot of Michele Buonora who would place the ball over the head of junior keeper Marie Mutryn into the top left corner of the net.
Mutryn was only forced to make three saves in the game while the Garnet offense would force the Ford's keeper to make 10.
The loss does not play well for Swarthmore's hopes of a Centennial Conference playoff berth but don't count them out. The Garnet will travel to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday for a must win Conference match-up. Play is set to begin at noon.
