Colombo Breaks Program Goals, Points Records With Hat Trick as Garnet Defeat Bryn Mawr 5-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Megan Colombo, it's your time to shine.
The Garnet senior broke the all-time program records for career goals and points with her goal in the 26th minute, while adding two more goals to complete the Garnet's first hat trick since since 2007 - which was also done by Colombo - as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (5-4-2, 4-1) defeated Bryn Mawr 5-0 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.
Junior Samantha Song and freshman Megan Brock both scored the first goals of the season in the second half, helping the Garnet win its third consecutive Centennial Conference match and remain near the top of the Conference standings.
Colombo now finds herself alone atop the record book with 29 career goals and 70 career points, passing Madeline Fraser '94 (26 goals, 65 points) for both records.
For the Colombo, the record-setting goal came in the 26th minute. The relentless Swarthmore pressure - which took 14 shots and placed five on goal in the first 25 minutes of play - was pushing the Bryn Mawr to its breaking point, but for the first part of the game, the Owls were able to keep the game even, thanks in part to excellent goalkeeping from Rebecca Joseph. But that all changed in the 26th minute, as Colombo - who already had taken six shots in the game - took a pass from freshman Aly Passananate on the left wing, dribbled to her right past the only Bryn Mawr defender, squared up with the goal and converted, giving the Garnet the early lead and re-writing the record book in the process.
Already with the records in hand, Colombo wasn't even close to content, as the senior netted the Garnet's next two goals to complete the traditional hat trick. In fact, Colombo's hat trick is the first for a member of the Garnet since she accomplished the same feat against Ursinus in 2007. In the 37th minute, Colombo struck again, this time set-up by back-to-back headed passes from the midfield by senior Hannah Purkey and sophomore Alexa Ross, making it a 2-0 game.
Colombo's final goal of the hat trick came at the start of the second half, as in the 51st minute, Colombo was again all alone in front of the net, once again set up from a Passanante pass, as she scored her third and final goal of the game, giving Swat a 3-0 lead.
Swarthmore's final two goals of the game also held a special significance, as Song (74th) and Brock (78th) both scored the first goals of the season. Song's goal came on a straight-way set piece, as the junior blasted a ball over the wall and goalkeeper, just keeping it below the bar to give Swarthmore a 4-0 lead. Brock - who had several near-scores throughout the game - then added the final nail the first goal of her Garnet career, heading home a goal in the 78th minute off an Ariana Spiegel assist, bringing the game to the 5-0 final.
In net for Swarthmore, junior Marie Mutryn, freshman Kaitlyn Sipiora and sophomore Beth Martin combined for the shutout. Sipiora made two saves. In net for Bryn Mawr, Joseph had a fine afternoon, making 13 saves to keep the Owls in the contest.
Swarthmore held significant advantages in shots (40-3 ) shots on goal (20-2 ), and corner kicks (10-1)
The Garnet return to action on Wednesday, October 13, when Swarthmore hosts Muhlenberg in a crucial Centennial Conference battle. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
