SKILLMAN, N.J. - Senior Rachel Wallwork of the Swarthmore College women's tennis team was awarded the ITA Atlantic South Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award for Division III women's tennis, the organization recently announced.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men's and women's players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements
Wallwork (Washington, D.C./Georgetown Day) recently wrapped up a stellar Swarthmore career, earning 2010 Centennial Conference Player of the Year honors - becoming just the second Swarthmore women’s tennis player to receive Player of the Year accolades on three occasions (Anjani Reddy ’04 won it four times – 2001-04) while becoming the third Swarthmore player (and eighth overall) to earn Player of the Year Honors. Wallwork also became the 17th player in Conference history to earn first-team All-Centennial Conference honors three times. Excelling on the court and in the classroom, Wallwork was named to the ESPN the Magazine/Cosida Academic All-District II First Team.
The eight regional winners are now in the running to make the national team, which will be announced by the ITA on May 27.
