Softball Places Four on All-Centennial Team

LANCASTER, Pa. - Senior pitcher Kathryn Riley, junior first baseman Krista Scheirer, junior designated player Kira Kern and freshman catcher Danielle Seltzer have been named to the 2010 All-Centennial Conference Softball team, the Conference announced on Thursday afternoon.

Riley is a first-team selection for the fourth time in her career, Scheirer and Seltzer made the second team, while Kern was named honorable mention.

Riley is just the sixth player in Centennial history to make the first team four times.

With her selection to the first team, Riley  (Dagsboro, Del. - Indian River) became just the sixth player in Centennial Conference history to be named to the first team four times.  Riley capped one of the greatest careers in Swarthmore softball history with another outstanding season on the mound, striking out 143 batters in Centennial play while sporting a 1.92 ERA. Riley finished in the Top 5 in the Centennial in strikeouts (143), wins (13 ), innings pitched (146 ), ERA (1.92) and opposing batting average (.231). The all-time Swarthmore leader in wins and strikeouts, Riley reached a personal milestone in late April when she recorded her 500th career strikeout in a victory over Franklin & Marshall.

Scheirer (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) makes the second team for the second consecutive season. One of the most feared hitters in the Centennial, she finished in the Top 5 in the Conference for home runs (5), total bases (60), and doubles (10). Scheirer also led the Garnet in slugging percentage (.600) and hits (38).

Seltzer (West Orange, N.J. - Newark Academy) made an immediate impact as a freshman, making the second team in just her rookie campaign. Seltzer led the Garnet and finished second in the Conference in RBIs (29) while blasting three home runs and 10 doubles.

Kern (Newtown Pa. - Council Rock North) makes the team as an honorable mention selection. She finished fifth in the Centennial in stolen bases (13) while batting .316 with a .415 on-base percentage.

Swarthmore takes on Gettysburg Saturday at 10: 00 a.m. in the first game of the Centennial Conference playoffs.
