Seltzer Powers Garnet to Split With Immaculata
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Danielle Seltzer slammed a pair of home runs, while senior pitcher Kathryn Riley tossed a one-hit, six-strikeout gem from the mound as the Swarthmore College softball team (18-18, 9-5) defeated visiting Immaculata 8-0 in five innings in the first game of the doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon from the College. The Mighty Macs won the second game 5-2.
Seltzer finished the first game 2-for-2 with four RBI - all coming from her two long home runs.
The Garnet wasted little time jumping on the Mighty Macs in the first game, scoring four runs in the first frame. Junior Maggie Viscarra got things started with an RBI single, bringing home the Garnet's first run. Following a single from Riley in her next at-bat, Seltzer connected on her first home run of the game, going opposite field to right field to give Swat a 4-0 lead.
The 4-0 lead was more than enough for Riley (12-8), who continued her dominant 10-day stretch by limiting the Mighty Macs to just one hit over five innings. Riley has now won seven consecutive decisions, allowing just two earned runs.
Swat added two runs in both the third and fifth inning to bring the game to the 8-0 final. Seltzer and freshman Allie Coleman added RBIs in the third inning, while freshman Angelica Sanchez ended the game with a two-RBI single in the fifth.
In the second game, the Mighty Macs used 10 hits off of Swat pitchers freshman Isabel Sanchez (4-7) and sophomore Marley Spector en route to the 5-2 win.
Junior Krista Scheirer finished Game 2 with two hits and an RBI.
Swarthmore closes out play from Clothier Field on Thursday with a doubleheader with Rowan (3:00 p.m.)
