Riley, Gill Earn Centennial Conference Player of the Week Honors
LANCASTER, Pa. - Senior pitcher Kathryn Riley of the Swarthmore College softball team and senior rightfielder Jimmy Gill of the Swarthmore baseball team have been selected as the Centennial Conference pitcher and hitter of the week for their respective sports, the Conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Riley (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) was nearly unhittable on the mound for the Garnet, sporting a 0.29 ERA with 32 strikeouts as part of a 4-0 week against Centennial Conference competition. In 24 innings of work, Riley allowed just one earned run - a solo home run in the first game against Washington - and just four hits while holding opponents to just a .144 batting average. For the week, Riley fired three complete games, highlighted by a season-high 12 K performance vs. F&M and a one-hitter in the second Washington game. In the second game against Washington, Riley became the first pitcher in Swarthmore history to reach 500 career strikeouts.
The honor is Riley's second pitcher of the week award for the 2010 season (March 7, 2010).
Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) had a huge week at the plate for the Garnet, helping Swat lock up its first-ever Centennial Conference tournament berth. He hit .444 (8-for-18), scoring seven times with a pair of home runs, eight RBIs and an .889 slugging percentage in the four games. With his two home runs for the week, Gill now has six for the season, the most by a Swarthmore individual since 1952 (Dick Hall, 11).
Both teams return to action on Tuesday, as softball hosts a doubleheader with Immaculata and baseball travels to DeSales.
