Swat Tennis Splits on Saturday with Loss to Mary Washington and Win Over Ursinus
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's tennis team (6-8, 5-0 CC) lost to Mary Washington (8-10) on Saturday 6-3 but remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with a 9-0 rout of the Ursinus Bears (5-9, 0-6 CC) in their afternoon match on Faulkner Courts.
Kelm was perfect for the Garnet winning both doubles and both singles matches of the day.
The Garnet started out Saturday morning with a match-up against Mary Washington University highlighted by a big No. 1 doubles victory by sophomores Stephen Youngblood and Zak Kelm over the Eagle's Evan Goff and Kaz Murata 8-3.
Kelm would go onto win his singles match against Murata in straight sets 7-5 and 6-2. Freshman James Wieler would pick up Swat's only other win of the match defeating Brian Hope 6-4 and 6-0.
Swarthmore's second match-up of the day would be Centennial Conference foe, Ursinus College. Swat wouldn't give up a set in the match in the 9-0 victory.
Wieler didn't give up a game in his singles victory over Ursinus.
Kelm and Youngblood would win again in No.1 doubles action with an 8-0 victory over Kevin Dean and Sean Kelley. Sophomore Max Bressman and Seth Udelson took down Chris Wyshock and Greg Lewis 8-1 and the freshman pair of Malik Mubeen and Wieler defeated Jason Zerbe and Josh Hollaman 8-1.
Kelm and Wieler were both perfect on the day after winning their singles matches against Ursinus. Kelm would defeat Ursinus No. 2 Wyshock 6-1 and 6-1 while Wieler wouldn't give up a game defeating Zerbe 6-0 and 6-0.
The Swarthmore men's tennis team returns to Faulkner Courts on Wednesday April 14 as Johns Hopkins visits Swarthmore. Play begins at 3:30 PM.
