Pride Take Down Garnet Lax 10-9

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team (6-5, 0-4 CC) lost its first non-conference game since 2008 on Thursday afternoon as the Widener Pride (7-3, 3-1 MAC) edged the Garnet with 10-9 victory on Clothier Field.

Mowry led the Garnet offense with three goals. She now has 30 goals this season.

The last time Swat and Widener met the Garnet would win 13-12 in two overtime periods.  It looked as if overtime was inevitable when junior Emily Evans would net the game-tying goal for Swat with only 1:47 left on the clock, making it 9-9.

Determined to avenge last season's loss to the Garnet, the Pride's Rachel Porter would fire the game-winning shot past senior keeper Allison Grein with only :47 seconds left in the game.

Swarthmore attackers dominated Widener throughout the game, out-shooting the Pride 34-20 but could not seem to find the back of the net.  Widener keeper Linda Salcedom would knock away 12 Garnet shots in the game.

The Garnet had a 4-3 lead after half thanks to two goals from sophomore Marie Mutryn and goals from sophomore Annelise Mowry and junior Amy Vachal.

Mowry would finish the game with three goals and one assist to lead the Garnet offense.  Mowry now has 30 goals this season.

Swat defense played a great game picking up 24 groundballs to the Pride's 14 and would only allow Widener 11-of-20 clear attempts.

Grein made eight saves in net for Swarthmore.

The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team returns to Clothier Field on Saturday April 10 for a Centennial Conference match-up with the Bryn Mawr Owls.  Play is slated to begin at 1 PM.
