Garnet Tennis Stays Hot With 7-2 Win Over Washington
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Sophomore Rosie DuBrin, freshman Stephanie Chia and freshman Kelsey Johnson all picked up victories in singles and doubles play as the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (7-3, 5-0) remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with an impressive 7-2 victory over Washington College on a hot Wednesday afternoon.
In a battle between two teams near the top of the Centennial standings, Johnson and junior Luann Cignavitch opened the match with an 8-1 doubles win over the Washington (7-3, 3-2) combo of Kat Cohen and Kelsey Mills at the No. 3 slot. Chia and DuBrin gave Swat a 2-0 lead with an 8-6 victory over WC's Kellie Foster and Campbell McNicol at No. 2. In a battle of two regionally ranked doubles pairs, the No. 10 duo of Jordan Finnegan and Brittany Marshall of Washington bested No. 9 Rachel Wallwork and Emily Rosenblum 8-6 at No. 1.
Ahead 2-1, Swat took control of the match in singles play. Chia opened singles with a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Mills at No. 6 to give Swarthmore a 3-1 advantage. Wallwork, the region's fifth-ranked singles player, then bested Finnegan, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 to make it 4-1. The singles win was Wallwork's 21st consecutive in Centennial Conference play.
After junior Alexis Hickman lost at No. 5 (6-4, 6-4) , Johnson came through and clinched the match for the Garnet with a 7-6(7), 6-4, victory against McNicol at No. 4. Rosenblum added a 6-4, 6-2, victory against Foster at No. 3, while DuBrin defeated Marshall, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7, at No. 2 to account for the final margin .
Swarthmore will look to remain unbeaten in Centennial play when it hosts Ursinus on Saturday from the College.
