Garnet Men Remain Unbeaten in Centennial Play With 6-3 Win Over Washington
CHESTERTOWN, Pa. - Despite losing at No.1 and No. 2 singles, the Swarthmore College men's tennis team showed off its depth, sweeping doubles play and singles No. 3 through No. 5 as the Garnet (5-7, 4-0) remained unbeaten in Centennial Conference play with 6-3 win over Washington College on Tuesday afternoon at Schottland Tennis Center.
Wee picked up a crucial No.3 win for the Garnet.
The Garnet won at all three doubles spots to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Sophomore Stephen Youngblood and sophomore Zak Kelm bested WC junior Adam Cranford and sophomore Kevin Papen , 8-5, at No. 1, sophomore Max Bressman and junior Mark Wee downed Josh Hedrick and Timothy Parks, 8-6, at No. 2, and freshmen Malik Mubeen and James Wieler defeated Aaron Ellison and sophomore John Menzione, 8-4, at No. 3.
Still, the Shoremen remained in the match thanks to upsets in No.1 and No. 2 singles. Washington's Cranford bested Youngblood 7-5, 6-1 while at No. 2, Kelm - who was recently named Centennial Conference Performer of the Week - fell to the Shoremen's Papen 6-4, 6-2.
With the losses at top, the Garnet won the match with depth. At No. 3 and No. 4 singles, Wee and Bressman both pulled out tough matches to give Swat the edge. Wee beat Washington's Ellison, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2) at No. 3 while Bressman completed a tough 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kyle Lisco. Mubeen brought home the final point of with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Brian Cedrowski at No. 5.
Swat returns to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Mary Washington (10:00 a.m.) and Ursinus (2:00 p.m.) from the College.
