Garnet Win Big Over Griffins 18-11

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomores Marie Mutryn and Annelise Mowry each netted six goals to lead the Swartmore College women's lacrosse team (5-1, 0-1 CC) to decisive 18-11 victory over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins (3-3, 0-1 CSAC) on Thursday evening from Clothier field.  

Mutryn would lead the Garnet with six goals in the 18-11 victory.

Mutryn, Mowry and junior Amy Vachal combined for 16 of the Garnet's 18 goals in the game; Vachal netting four.

Swarthmore dug itself a hole early in the game, going down 1-0 within the first three minutes off of an own goal caused by sophomore Emily Bryant.  Mutryn evened it up only a minute later with her first goal of the game.

The Garnet would fall behind once more in the 12th minute before Vachal would tie it up again only :57 seconds later. Swat would control the rest of the half and allowing only two more goals and netting eight more in the half.

Swat defense was crucial in the game as freshman Beth Martin would cause three turnovers and pick up three ground balls.  Senior Abbe Muller and Vachal would also catch three ground balls apiece.

Senior Allison Grein had nine saves and two caused turnovers to earn her fifth win of the season.

In the second half, Swarthmore would put up seven more goals thanks to the trio of Mutryn, Mowry and Vachal but the Griffins would fight back putting up six goals including three unanswered goals to end the game.

Muller and Martin were the only other Garnet players to score in the game with one goal apiece.

The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team will return to the field on Saturday March 27 when they travel to Gettysburg College for Centennial Conference action.  The ball drops at 1 PM.
