Garnet Offense Stagnent as Mighty Macs Run Past Swarthmore 9-2
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Immaculata (1-5) pounded out nine runs on 12 hits while pitcher Aaron Dietrich held Swarthmore (3-6) to only two runs and six hits as the Garnet fell 9-2 in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon from Clothier Field.
Aggressive base running was the element that won the game for the Mighty Macs with seven stolen bases in the game; four of them turning into runs. David News got the show started with two stolen bases and a run in the first inning.
Swarthmore fired back in the bottom half of the first inning that started with a hard hit double to left center off the bat of sophomore Anthony Montalbano. Two batters later sophomore Spencer Ross would drive him in with an RBI single. Ross would go two-for-four in the game.
In the second inning sophomore pitcher Kyle Crawford would quickly load the bases before striking out the next two and putting the potential third out in a one-two count before hitting the batter and sending the leading run to the plate.
Immaculata's next batter would hit a two-run single to left field to give the Mighty Macs a 4-1 lead in the second.
The Swarthmore offense went dormant from that point on with only three hits before Ross would single in the eighth and seniors Jimmy Gill and Wiley Archibald would hit back-to-back singles in the ninth.
Gill highlighted the Garnet offense going two-for-two with a run scored.
The Swarthmore baseball team will look to bounce back on Saturday March 20th when they travel to Vassar for an afternoon doubleheader at 12 PM.
