Garnet Tennis Picks Up First Centennial Win, Earns Saturday Split
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - A clean sweep of Centennial Conference rival Bryn Mawr highlighted a two-match day for the Swarthmore College women's tennis team (3-2, 1-0), as the Garnet defeated the Owls 9-0, but opened the day with a 7-2 loss to No. 13 Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon from the Mullan Center.
Wallwork finished the day with two doubles victories.
Senior Rachel Wallwork - ranked No. 28 in Division III women's tennis - and teammate freshman Emily Rosenblum were the stars of the day, teaming up to post doubles wins over Mary Washington's combo of Courtney Goimarac/Katie Schafer, as well as Bryn Mawr's Perrochi and Melanie Shafer. Rosenblum also picked up a No. 1 singles win over Bryn Mawr's Anna Perrochi (6-1, 6-0). Wallwork fell in No.1 singles in the Mary Washington match, losing a three-set battle to Goimarac (6-1, 2-6, 6-0).
Junior Alexis Hickman earned the Garnet's only other point against Mary Washington, picking up a No. 5 singles win over Cassie Bowman (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12). Hickman also picked up a No. 4 singles win in the Bryn Mawr match, finishing the day at 2-0.
Against Bryn Mawr, sophomore Rosie DuBrin, freshman Kelsey Johnson, junior Luann Cignavitch and freshman Taylor Tucker all earned singles victories, while the doubles teams of DuBrin/Cignavitch and freshman Dina Zingaro/Johnson also picked up resounding victories.
The Garnet return to Centennial Conference action next Saturday with a home match against Gettysburg. Play is expected to begin at 1:00 p.m.
