Offense Comes to Life as Garnet Slug Past Pitt-Bradford 16-10
GOODYEAR, Ariz. - The unusually-chilly Arizona weather did little to cool off the smokin' hot Garnet bats, as the Swarthmore College baseball team (3-0) scored 16 runs on 17 hits to defeat Pitt-Bradford 16-10 on Tuesday afternoon from Desert Edge High School in Goodyear.
Sophomore third baseman Anthony Montalbano led the offensive onslaught with four hits, including a double. Senior Wiley Archibald knocked in four RBI on two hits while Miles Santo brought home three runs with a bases-clearing double in the eighth inning. Freshman Tim Kwilos added three singles.
Sophomore Ignacio Rodriguez (1-0) pitched three superb innings in relief - striking out six - to pick up his first victory of the season. Rodriguez worked in relief of starter Andy Allen, who struck out five in 4.1 innings of work.
The 3-0 start is the Garnet's best since opening the 1986 season 4-0.
After the first two innings, it looked as if the Garnet might run away with the game from the get-go. Keyed by RBI singles from Montalbano, Kwilos and sophomore Spencer Ross, the Garnet built a commanding 6-0 lead after just two inning of play.
But the Panthers fought back in the fourth inning, finally getting to starter Allen - who started the game off by striking out five of his first seven batters - with three runs on three hits. An RBI single from Pitt-Bradford's Jake Bizzard cut the lead in half at 6-3.
The Garnet answered right back in fifth inning - and so did the Panthers. Swat answered with threes runs of its own in the top of the fifth, fueled once again by RBI singles from Archibald and Ross, extending the lead to 9-3. The Panthers answered right back in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs - fueled by a three-run home run from Luke Streitch - to make it a 9-8 ballgame after five innings of play.
Ahead 11-8 heading into the eighth inning, the Garnet finally put away the pesky Panthers thanks to the bat of Santo. With the bases loaded and two outs, Santo connected on a bases-clearing double to dead-center field, making it a 14-8 game and ending the Panthers thoughts of the comeback.
Senior Thomas Nakamura added two hits for the Garnet, while freshman Ben Schneiderman legged out a triple.
Sophomore Adam Hardy worked 1.1 innings of relief, striking out three. Pitt-Bradford's Ben McCracken took the loss, allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Each team committed four errors, while Swat saw five different players hit by pitches.
The Garnet return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Wesleyan from Goodyear beginning at 9:00 a.m.
