Guilford Sweeps Swarthmore in Softball Doubleheader

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Swarthmore softball team (2-2) got off to a rough start on its spring break campaign as Guilford College (10-3-1) lit up Garnet pitching en route to a 13-2 and 14-6 sweep of the doubleheader.

Game 1  BOX SCORE

Senior Kathryn Riley  came out firing again striking out the side in the first inning and let up only one hit in the second.  Riley then knocked in junior Kira Kern on a double to put the Garnet up one but the Quakers responded in with four hits including two singles, a double and a triple to put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the third.

It was all Guilford from that point on putting up six runs on seven hits in the fourth inning followed by four more runs in the fifth off of a Quaker grand slam to end the game early.

Freshman Danielle Seltzer had an RBI in the fifth driving in senior Michele Perch on a single.

Game 2  BOX SCORE

Swarthmore struck first again in game two scoring a run in the first on a bases loaded walk.  Guilford answered quickly and  took a  4-1 lead  after three innings of play.

The fourth inning looked to be the Garnet's inning when freshman Kate Smayda scored on another bases loaded walk followed by a three RBI double off the bat of sophomore Liz Cushing to put Swarthmore up 5-4.  Cushing went two-for-four in the game.

Guilford had a rally of its own in the bottom half of the inning with four more runs thanks to a three run RBI of their own from Kimberly Keys.

The Garnet were only able to tack on one more run in the game and Quakers ended the game early again, this time in the sixth, with five runs off of two hits.  Swarthmore's three errors were the turning point of the inning.

The Garnet women will continue its spring break softball action on Wednesday March 10 when they face off against the Peace College Pacers in a doubleheader.  First pitch will fly at 2 PM.
