Kathryn Stockbower Named Academic All-America
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Kathryn Stockbower '11 of Swarthmore College has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America women's basketball team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday morning. Stockbower is a third-team selection in the College Division and the lone representative from the Centennial Conference.
To be nominated for the ESPN the Magazine All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his or her team.
Stockbower is the 11th Academic All-America selection from Swarthmore. She is the first Garnet student-athlete to be recognized as an Academic All-American since Caitlin Mullarkey ’09 was named to the women's soccer team in 2008. She is the second Swarthmore women's basketball player to receive the honor, following Heather Kile '02.
Stockbower - a preseason All-American - is coming off a tremendous 2009-10 campaign that saw her lead the Centennial Conference in rebounding (13.5 rpg), finish second in scoring (17.7 ppg), third in shooting percentage (51.2) while finishing seventh in the nation in rebounding average . For the 2009-10 season, Stockbower finished with a Centennial Conference-leading 22 double-doubles while scoring in double-figures in all 25 of the Garnet's games. For her career, Stockbower has 64 double-doubles - just 15 shy of the NCAA Division III record - while scoring in double-figures in a Centennial Conference-record 72 consecutive games.
This season, Stockbower became just the second player in Swarthmore history to register 1,000 career points and rebounds. She currently ranks fifth in all-time points (1,307) and second in all-time rebounds (1,013) at the College.
Along with being the lone representative from the Centennial Conference, Stockbower is the only junior represented in the College Division. Stockbower is joined on the third team by Ariel Brough (Baldwin-Wallace), Jessica Canary (Indianapolis), Claire Ely (Puget Sound) and Sarah Stream (Michigan Tech).
For her career, Stockbower has stockpiled numerous honors and awards: 2008-09 Centennial Conference Performer of the Year, 2009 WBCA All-Region, 2008 Centennial Conference First Team, Centennial Conference Player of the Week (four times ), ECAC Performer of the Week (four times) and D3Hoops.com Team of the Week (three times).
Stockbower is only the fifth player in Centennial Conference history to be named to the women's basketball Academic All-America team and the first since Kathy Darling (Johns Hopkins) in 2003.
In the classroom, Stockbower is majoring in Biology and German Studies. At the completion of the basketball season, she will be studying abroad in Germany.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
