Sweet Results for Swat Track at Boston University Valentine Invite
BOSTON - Sophomore Daniel Ly finished in eighth place in the triple jump with a leap of 43'5.25" - good for the third-best jump in the Centennial Conference this indoor season - to lead the Garnet in the prestigious Valentine Invitational from Boston University on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Ly led a small contingent of Garnet athletes to travel north to Boston University - the alma mater of Swarthmore track & field assistant coach Mike Salem - to face off against some of the best competition in the nation.
On the women's side, sophomore Kenyetta Givans and senior Lauren DeLuca - two of the Garnet's top medal hopefuls heading into the Centennial Conference championships in two weeks - each had strong performances. Givans finished with a time of 8.63 in the 55m hurdles, while DeLuca crossed the finish line in a time of 2:24.10.
In the one mile run, freshman Jen Johnson - who has already earned a spot in the Centennial championships -had another strong showing, finishing in a time of 5:31.65. In that same race, Laura Paulsen of Johns Hopkins broke the Centennial conference record with a time of 4:53.90.
Also on the men's side, the freshmen distance duo of John McMinn and Jacob Phillips had another strong showing in the 3,000 meters preparation of conference championships. McMinn finished in a time of 9:00.82, while Phillips crossed the line in 9:29.51.
Swat returns to action with the entire squad next Friday at the Keogh Invite from Haverford College. Action begins at 4:00 p.m.
