All-American Anne Miller Earns NCAA Time To Highlight Garnet Swim Split at Washington
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior All-American Anne Miller stole the show from snowy Washington College, breaking the Casey Swim Center record and earning an NCAA B-cut time in the 200 butterfly (2:07.84), as the Swarthmore College swim teams earned a split against Centennial rival Washington, with the men earning a 121-77 victory and the Swat women (4-6, 2-5) falling to the Shorewomen 120-84 on Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Swat men (6-3, 5-1) have now won four consecutive conference meets heading into the Centennial Conference Championships in 10 days from Franklin & Marshall.
Miller's record time and victory in the 200-butterfly is even more impressive when considering it came against Washington's Rachel Glasser (2:11.60) - who took third place in the event at the 2009 NCAA Division III championships.
Sophomore Tim Brevart (50-freestyle/22.71) and freshmen Daniel Duncan (200-butterfly/1:59.73) and Jake Benveniste (500-freestyle/5:03.84) all won individual races to lead the Garnet men to victory, while the Swat "A" 200-yard freestyle relay team of Duncan, Brevart, sophomore Neil Palmer and senior Michael Ahn took first place with a time of 1:30.77.
Along with Miller's spectacular performance in the 200-yard butterfly she kept her unbeaten streak alive, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.18. Junior Chelsea Brett finished right behind Miller in the 200 free, touching the wall in 2:04.59.
In the 200-yard IM, the women battled for the top three times with sophomore Rosalie Lawrence (2:21.67), senior Casey Osborn (2:21.76) and junior Stephanie Su (2:22.75) going one-two-three.
The men's team solidified its victory by recording four one-two victories in the 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Freshman Tyler Hanson (10:12.49) and sophomore Frank Chien (11:33.71) topped the 1000-yard free, Duncan and Hanson (2:03.00) topped the 200-yard fly and Benveniste and freshman Josh Satre (5:08.37) clocked in first in the 500-yard free.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Duncan, Brevart, Palmer and Ahn led the way followed by the Swat "B" relay team of freshman Roger Chin, junior David Dulaney, junior Santiago Lombo and senior Danny Friel, touching the wall in 1:33.40.
The meet concludes conference and regular season action for both the Garnet men and women before they travel to the Centennial Conference championships at Franklin & Marshall College on Friday February 19th.
