Garnet Blast York College (N.Y.) 79-39; Move On To Championship Game
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Kathryn Stockbower led all scorers with 26 points, while freshman Madeline Ross (11 points) and junior Ceylan Bodur (10 points) also scored in double figures as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (3-6, 1-4) blasted York College (N.Y.) 79-39 on Sunday evening in the opening round of the Catholic University Tournament from the DuFour Center.
With the victory, Swarthmore moves on to the championship game to face host Catholic tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
The 40-point margin of victory is the Garnet's largest since defeating Eastern University 87-47 on November 17, 2007. The victory also snaps the Garnet's four-game losing skid.
Junior Summer Miller-Walfish - the College's all-time blocks leader - added a season-high six blocks.
The Garnet dominated the contest in all facets of the game, putting up season-highs in rebounds (55), steals (13), while the defense held the Cardinals (4-6, 1-1 ) to season-lows in points (39) and field-goal percentage (24 percent).
Swarthmore's offense came out of the gates firing, scoring 53 points in the first half - more than it scored for the entire game in its last game against Widener. Combined with a spirited defensive effort that brought the York offense to a standstill, Swat built a commanding 30-point halftime lead against the overmatched Cardinals and never looked back.
Bodur led the team with 11 rebounds to record the second double-double of her career. Senior captain Pam Costello added 8 points and three steals.
The balanced Garnet offensive attack saw 11 of 12 players score while shooting 49 percent from the field.
Tomorrow's championship game with Catholic will begin at 4:00 p.m.
