Stockbower Scores 30, Hits Game-Winning Shot as Garnet Defeat McDaniel 51-49
WESTMINTER, Md. - Junior Kathryn Stockbower hit the game-winning lay-up with 3.4 seconds remaining in the game, highlighting a 30 point, 13 rebound performance from the preseason All-American as the Swarthmore College women's basketball team (2-2, 1-1) picked up its first conference victory of the season with a thrilling 51-49 win over McDaniel on Tuesday evening.
For Stockbower, it was just the latest outstanding performance from one of the best post-players in all of Division III. She scored 30 of the Garnet's 51 points in the win at McDaniel, scoring at least 30 points for the second consecutive game. The performance also marked the 46th double-double of her career (seventh consecutive) and Centennial-Conference record 51st straight game scoring in double-figures.
A great first half put the Garnet up 11 going into the second half and it looked as if Swarthmore would cruise to its first Conference victory. After Stockbower netted the first two points of the half it looked to be lock but the next 20 minutes belonged to the Green Terror as they went on a 20-7 run to take a 37-36 lead.
For the next 9:19 the Garnet and Green Terror battled for possession and the win. With :20 seconds left and the game tied at 49, senior Pam Costello - back for her first game after being out with an injury - brought down a big rebound after a missed jumper by McDaniel.
Then with 3.4 seconds left in the game, Stockbower broke through the McDaniel defense to drop in the the game-winning lay-up. The lay-up gave Stockbower her 30 points and the Garnet the 51-49 win.
Captain Pam Costello made her senior year premier with nine points and three rebounds.
The Garnet will look to try to keep the momemtum going and go 2-1 in the conference when they travel to Johns Hopkins on Thursday December 3. Play begins at 7 PM.
