Swimming Sweeps McDaniel in Conference Openers
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior All-American Anne Miller (1000 freestyle, 200 freestyle), freshman Hannah Gotwals (200 IM, 100 backstroke) and freshman Daniel Duncan (1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle) each won two individual races to lead the Swarthmore men's and women's swimming teams to decisive victories against McDaniel in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet women (2-0, 1-0) earned a 56-38 victory while the men (1-1, 1-0) won by a 56-39 margin.
A solid early-season performance from both squads, Swat saw seven individual winners on the women's side and seven on the men's side, while both squads also captured the 200-yard medley relays.
Leading the way for the women were Miller and Gotwals. Miller touched first on both the 1000 freestyle (11:16.93) and 100 freestyle (2:04.62) while also earning a first with the 200-yard medley relay squad (2:03.40). Gotwals touched first in the 200 IM (2:25.24) and 100 backstroke (1:10.33) while also leading the 200-yard medley relay squad.
On the men's side, Duncan continued the stellar start to his collegiate career, taking first in the 1000 freestyle (10:33.70) and 500 freestyle (4:59.28) while also helping the 200-yard medley relay squad to a first-place finish.
On the women's side, three other individuals recorded first-place finishes. Sophomore Naomi Glassman took first in the 50-yard freestyle (27.41), senior Casey Osborn led the pack in the 100 butterfly (1:01.27) and junior Allison Bishop touched first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:44.37). Junior Stephanie Su and sophomore Rosalie Lawrence also picked up firsts as members of the 200-yard medley relay.
For the men, the strong team performance was anchored by five other individual firsts outside of Duncan. Senior Michael Ahn touched first in the 100 freestyle (51.06), Sophomore Tim Brevart took first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.69) while fellow sophomore Lance Liu won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.91). Finally, newcomer Jake Benveniste touched first in the 200 freestyle (1:52.24) and fellow freshman Roger Chin won the 100-yard backstroke (58.46). Junior Sterling Satterfield also picked up a first as a member of the 200-yard medley relay.
The Garnet conclude a season-opening three-meet road swing when it travels to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, November 14. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
