Swarthmore Swimmers Open Season With Split at Widener
CHESTER, Pa. - The Garnet women swam to victory over Widener University 114-79, but the men fell short, losing to the Pride 118-87 in both squad's season-opening event on Wednesday night from the Schwartz Center. Senior All-American Anne Miller led the Swarthmore women to victory with three race wins (1000, 500, 200 freestyles) and 27 points. Strong performances from the freshmen class led the men's team, with Daniel Duncan earning two race victories (200 freestyle, 200 butterfly) and a medley second in his first collegiate race.

The Garnet women dominated the Pride in its season opener to start out with a 1-0 record. Swarthmore controlled the 1000 yard freestyle race owning the top three times with Miller winning with a time of 11:17.87. She also won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.84 and the 200 yard freestyle with a time 2:04.36.
Sophomore Rosalie Lawerence also finished strong for the women, finishing first in the 200 IM (2:21.12), followed by teammate senior Casey Osborn (2:21.61). The Garnet women also swept the top three places in the 200 yard butterfly, led by first-place freshmen Hannah Gotwals (2:18.40), second-place Osborn (2:20.75) and third-place sophomore Naomi Glassman (2:25.61).
Sophomore Jacqueline Scala picked up the Garnet women's other first-place finish on the day, leading the pack in the 200 backstroke (2:25.71).
On the men's side of the pool, the Swarthmore freshmen stole the show. Freshman Daniel Duncan treated the season opener as a way to showcase his young talent. Duncan won both the 200 yard free with a time of 1:48.68 and the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:00.78.
Just like the women, the men dominated the 1000 yard free, taking the top three times, led by freshman Tyler Hanson with a time of 10:17.28. Hanson was followed by fellow freshmen Jake Benveniste (10:24..26) and Joshua Satre (10:26.21).
Junior Sterling Satterfield captured first-place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.56, followed in second place by sophomore teammate Lance Liu (2:19.41).
With the split, the “320 Challenge” is now tied at 3-3. The challenge, in its first season, pits the schools in a head-to-head match-up of their 19 shared sports.
The Garnet will try to make a splash on Saturday when they visit Conference rival McDaniel. Swimming is slated to start at 2 PM.
