Swarthmore Volleyball Reaches New Heights With 3-1 Victory Over Muhlenberg
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Another match, another milestone victory.
The Swarthmore College volleyball team moved to 15-6 overall and 5-1 in conference - its most wins in a single season since joining the Centennial Conference in 1992 - as it knocked off Muhlenberg College 3-1 on Tuesday night. Sophomore Genny Pezzola led the way for the Garnet with 17 kills and 15 digs.
The Garnet traveled to Muhlenberg looking to pick up their 15th victory of the season and its highest win total since joining the Conference. The match wasn't pretty but Swarthmore got the job done winning in four sets 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-22.
In the first set Swarthmore got out to a big lead before the Mules rallied back to get within a point before the Garnet were able to close it out. The second set was also a back and forth battle but went in favor of Muhlenberg this time to tie up the match at a set a piece. The Garnet took control again in set three posting 16 kills to take the set.
In set four the Mules looked as if they would be sending the match to a fifth set building an early 6-0 lead but Swarthmore wasn't done yet, battling back to take the lead and finish the match with five straight points. Freshman Allie Coleman anchored the Garnet offense with 38 assists while freshman Kat Montemurro and Pezzola pelted the Muhlenberg defense with a combined 31 kills.
Swarthmore will travel to Rowan University this weekend to compete in a tri-meet between Rowan and Stevenson on Saturday October 17th. The Garnet will play at 11 AM and 1 PM.
