Garnet Volleyball Drop the Shorewomen in Straight Sets, 3-0
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Genny Pezzola had 14 kills for the Garnet Wednesday night as host Swarthmore (12-5) made quick work of conference challenger Washington College (8-7) for a 3-0 straight sets victory (25-13, 25-15 and 25-21).
The Garnet were ready for a tough conference match-up when Washington College came to town but the Garnet sprinted out of the gate and made it look easy. Swarthmore ran away with games one and two quickly but the Shorewomen didn't give up in game three.
Washington took an early 3-0 lead in the game before the Garnet fought back to tie the game up. From that point on the lead changed hands four more times before Swarthmore rallied for five straight points to put the game score at 23-17. The Garnet captured the victory but not before Washington gave them a quick scare with a 4-0 rally that came up short.
Sophomore Lisa Shang and the Garnet defense held off the Washington attack combining for 56 digs in the game.
Pezzola blasted 14 kills to lead the attack with the help of freshmen Allie Coleman and Kat Montemurro who combined for an additional 23. Senior Kearney Bangs (17) and Coleman (21) anchored the attack and led the team in assists.
Conference play will continue for the Garnet as then travel to McDaniel on Saturday October 3rd. Play will start at 1 PM.
