SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week Marie Mutryn made nine saves, but the Blue Jays Ava Scheininger scored  in the  37th minute of the first half as the Garnet  (7-2, 1-1) fell to conference-rival No. 14 Johns Hopkins 1-0 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field.

Swarthmore - fresh off a thrilling win of rival Widener - was primed and ready to defeat the Blue Jays for the first time in the program's history. But Hopkins controlled the offensive play in the first half and landed the only goal of the game  off  the foot of sophomore Ava Scheininger, to give JHU the early 1-0 lead.

The rest of the game was a defensive deadlock as the goalies ran the show.  Mutryn had nine saves for the Garnet to keep the game close.

In the 65th minute of the game, an offensive flurry gave the Garnet a golden opportunity to the tie the game.  Junior Megan Colombo headed the ball beautifully towards the net - only to be thwarted by Hopkins' goal keeper Karen Guszkowski as she lunged to make a one handed save.  The save marked the end of Garnet opportunities and finalized the score at 1-0.

The Garnet is back in action on Tuesday September 29th when its hosts Washington College.  Kick-off is slated to begin at 7 PM.
