No. 3/9 Garnet Fall to No. 12 Dickinson 1-0 on Penalty Kick in OT
CARLISLE, Pa. – CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson's Thomas Parkinson scored on a penalty kick in the 7th minute of the first overtime, as the No. 12 Red Devils upset the No. 3/9 Swarthmore men's soccer team 1-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Central Pennsylvania. The loss is the Garnet's (7-1, 1-1) first of the 2009 season.
The penalty was called when Swarthmore sophomore midfielder Roberto Contreras, IV dove to prevent a Dickinson shot from going into the Garnet goal after goalkeeper David D'Annunzio had dived to save a previous shot. Contreras, IV was sent off for handling the ball, and Parkinson converted the resulting kick. The goal was the first allowed by the Garnet in 501 minutes and the first allowed by sophomore D'Annunzio this season. D'Annunzio, the conference leader in goals against average, finished the match with five saves.
A tough and physical match played during stretches of intense rain, the game was evenly played throughout with neither nationally-ranked Centennial Conference power able to gain much momentum to take control. The Red Devils (7-1, 2-0) finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots and and 8-5 advantage on corner kicks on the afternoon. Both teams had cleared shots off their goallines, including a shot that Dickinson cleared just before the end of regulation when Garnet junior forward Morgan Langley had chipped the ball over Dickinson's goalkeeper.
The Garnet will look to get back in the win column when it returns home on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to host Washington College in a Centennial Conference contest. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
