Swat Inches Closer To CC Playoffs
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's tennis team took to the Faulkner tennis courts on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, topping Centennial rivals Dickinson College. With a decisive 8-1 victory over the Red Devils (11-6, 4-3 CC, the Garnet men (8-6, 6-1 CC) are just one win away from securing a bid in the Centennial Conference Championships.
In doubles play, Swarthmore freshman Zak Kelm (Shaker Heights, Ohio / University School) and senior Kevin Shaughnessy (South Kingston, R.I. / South Kingston) snatched an 8-2 win from Red Devils’ Ross Anstaett and Hunter Holbrook in the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Mark Wee (Syosset, NY, Syosset) and freshman Stephen Youngblood (Norcross, Ga.) chalked up another Garnet triumph at No. 2, defeating Dickinson’s Trevor Heck and Bo Marshall 8-5.
Kelm continued his superb rookie season at No. 3 singles, downing Heck 6-1, 6-3 for his eighth consecutive win of the season. Shaughnessy (left) took on Holbrook again at No. 2 singles, winning 6-2, 6-1. Wee excelled at No. 4 singles, serving up a 6-3, 6-1 victory for the Garnet. At No. 5 singles, senior JJ England (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. / Benjamin School) handily defeated opponent Pavel Hejsek, 6-3, 6-2, while freshman Max Bressman (Chappaqua, NY/ Horace Greeley) dominated Red Devil Kurt Mendelson 6-1, 6-0 to round out the Garnet win at No. 6 singles.
On Tuesday, the Garnet men will face off against rival Haverford College (12-2, 7-0 CC) on the Main Line, in their second-to-last regular season match.
