Fords Rain Down On Garnet
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Despite Swarthmore senior Anna de Regt's four goal effort the Garnet fell to Haverford 10-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Field in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action.
The Fords improved to a 10-5 overall record and 4-4 league record while Swarthmore fell to 9-6 and 1-6 CC.
Swarthmore was the first on the ball de Regt (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) brought the ball down the field and notched her first goal of the evening.
The Fords fired back scoring four unanswered goals making the score 4-1. Haverford was propelled by senior Lauren Finkel who had two notches during the run.
With seven minutes left in the half Garnet attack Marissa Schaffer ’09 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel Prep) was fed by classmate Kelsey Hatzell (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown) for her 17th goal of the season.
Following a Ford goal, de Regt collected her second goal of the game making the score 5-3 in favor of the Fords with 14 seconds left in the half.
Swarthmore scored the first three goals of the half starting with Marie Mutryn’s (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) side arm shot during a free position to come within one goal of the Fords. The game tied was knotted at five goals each with de Regt completing her hat trick after bringing the ball up the field during a Swarthmore clear. Garnet attack Abbe Muller '10 (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad) sent a pass to freshman Maddie Williams (Kennett Square, Pa. / Kennett) from behind the cage to go up one goal on the Fords.
Haverford tied the game up at six goals a piece as freshman Mary Alice Postel was assisted by classmate Jen Schmidt ten minutes into the half. Ford sophomore Liz Mayell scooped up a ground ball in front of the Garnet cage and shot one into the net pushing the score to 8-6. Less than a minute later Finkle put away her second goal of the game with 6:46 left.
As de Regt took a shot a few yards from the net she was thrown to the ground by a Haverford defender and was awarded a free position shot. She took advantage of the free shot and scored her fourth goal of the game
Haverford scored the final goal of the game to push the score to 10-7 with 1:55 left on the clock.
Swarthmore sophomore Jean Dahlquest (Wauwatosa, Wis. / Milwaukee Arts) made her first career start in goal for the Garnet collecting seven saves.
The Garnet will return to Clotheir Field this Thursday, April 16th to host Centennial Conference foe Washington College. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. as the second game featured in the lacrosse double header.
