Gavin Music to Garnet Ears in Overtime Win
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet junior attacker Gavin Musynske scored his third game-winner of the season with 1:38 left in the second overtime, sending Swarthmore to a 8-7 win over visiting Rensselaer Saturday afternoon at Clothier Fields.
Swarthmore evens its overall record at 5-5 while the Engineers dip to 5-6.
Rensselaer rallied back from a two-goal deficit late in the fourth period, using goals from Paul Cerone and Austin Ray in the final minute of play to send the game into extra time.
After a scoreless overtime period, Musynske (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) isolated himself on the right side of the Engineers’ cage and used a quick stutter step to shake free of the Rensselaer defender. Musynske (left) freed himself enough to unleash a shot into the near side of the cage for his second score of the afternoon and team-leading 14th score of the season.
Swarthmore had built a lead at the start of the fourth period as freshman midfielder Max Hubbard (Washington, D.C. / St. Alban's) scored three consecutive goals in a six-minute span. Hubbard now has seven goals on the season, ranking fourth on the team.
Rensselaer attacker Brett Evans led the Engineer offense with three goals, including two consecutive scores in the third period to give the visitors a brief 5-4 lead.
Garnet goalie Kevin Friedenberg ’10 (Needham, Mass. / Needham) made 11 saves for his fifth victory while RPI netminder Ryan DeJordy made nine stops in the loss.
Swarthmore returns to action on Thursday afternoon, hosting another non-conference opponent (Hamilton College) at Clothier Field. First face-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
