Mules Roll Past Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's tennis team suffered their first home loss of the season, falling to Centennial Conference foe Muhlenberg College 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon. Junior Rachel Wallwork and senior Jennie Park collected wins in both their doubles and singles matches.

Taking advantage of the lovely weather, the Garnet women ( 3-4, 2-1 CC) challenged the Mules (3-3, 2-1 CC) on Faulkner courts. The no.5 regionally ranked tandem of Wallwork (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) and Park (Rockford, Ill. / Guilford) extended their win streak to four after making quick work of Muhlenberg’s Jenn Powell and Carly Rotfeld with an 8-1 decision.

After capturing a well-earned doubles victory, Wallwork met Powell in the no. 1 singles match. Wallwork cruised through the first three points, frustrating Powell with her heavy forehand and quick feet. Powell battled back, taking the next two points. But Wallwork only allowed her service to be broken once, and went on to take the first set 6-3, and powered through the second, 6-1. Wallwork continued her Centennial Conference win streak to 13 matches in a row.

At the no. 2 spot, Muhlenberg’s Caitie Druker kept up with Park, only to surrender a 6-4 set. But Park quickly showed her skill, snagging a lop-sided second set, 6-1, to seal her victory.

The Garnet will welcome nationally ranked #6 Mary Washington to Swarthmore Saturday, April 4. The match will commence at 9:30.
