Garnet Pitches Split At Meredith
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Swarthmore softball pitching staff allowed just one run in two games at Meredith College on Wednesday afternoon, leading to a split of a non-conference doubleheader.
Senior captain Alexandra Zelaski (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark) spread seven hits over 6.0 innings, allowing only a first-inning run. Zelaski did not get any run support from the Swarthmore bats (two hits, seven runners left on base) and the Garnet dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener. Fellow captains Christine Sendelsky '09 (Edison, N.J. / John Stevens) and Kathryn Riley '10 (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River) accounted for the Garnet basehits.
Riley took the ball in the second game, following Zelaski's lead in shutting down the Avenging Angels offense with a three-hit shutout. Riley (2-1) fanned five batters over 7.0 innings with just one walk.
The Garnet offensive broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Riley opened the sixth with a double to center and Sendelsky followed with her first triple of the season to drive Riley home. Meredith suffered through some fielding problems and Swarthmore took advantage, capped by a two-out RBI single by catcher Kira Kern '11 (Newtown, Pa. / Council Rock North) for a 4-0 lead.
Swarthmore (2-4) travels north to Maryland this weekend for the Sea Gull Invitational at Salisbury University. The Garnet open play on Friday at 12:00 p.m. versus Mary Washington and will follow up with a 4:00 p.m. contest against host Salisbury.
