Stockbower Named CC POY, Grigsby Also All-Conference
LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore sophomore Kathryn Stockbower was named Centennial Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year and senior Melissa Grigsby was selected honorable mention as announced by the Conference office Tuesday afternoon following a vote by the Centennial head coaches.
Stockbower (Fort Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin), a forward, was also a unanimous First-Team selection after leading the Conference in rebounds (12.6 per game) while ranking second in points (17.7 per game) during 18 Centennial contests. Overall, Stockbower ranked second in all of Division III with 13.6 boards per game and was in the top 50 with 17.7 points per game. She posted 21 double-doubles for the second straight season (ranking second in Division III) and at Haverford on February 21, broke the Centennial record for consecutive games scoring in double figures with her 47th consecutive games. Stockbower tied a Conference record and broke a school record on December 2nd corralling 24 rebounds in a 71-69 win at McDaniel.
Stockbower (left) is the third Garnet woman to receive Player of the Year accolades, joining All-Americans Heather Kile ’02 (2000, 2001) and Katie Robinson ’04 (2002, 2003) and the fourth Centennial player to earn P.O.Y honors as a sophomore following the footsteps of Kile (2000), Robinson (2002), and Dickinson’s Annie Guzek (1994). Stockbower becomes just the second Centennial player to be selected to the first team as a freshman and sophomore (joining Kile, who was named first-team all four seasons).
Stockbower received a handful of weekly honors this season. She was twice selected as the Centennial Conference Player of the Week (December 9 and January 5). Stockbower was also honored as the E.C.A.C Division III South Region Player of the Week on December 9 and selected for the D3hoops.com Team of the Week on December 9 and January 14.
Grisgby (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East), a guard, started all 18 Conference games as the Swarthmore floor general, leading the team in assists (4.00 per game) and free-throw percentage (88.4%). The captain ranked third in the Conference in assists while listing fifth with a 1.20 assist/turnover ratio. Grigsby (right) left an indelible impression in her final game in Tarble Pavilion, scoring a career-high 22 points in a Senior Night win over Washington College.
This is Grigsby’s third total All-Centennial selection; she has been selected twice as a defender on the Swarthmore women’s lacrosse team.
Swarthmore completed the 2008-09 regular season with a 13-12 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Centennial Conference.
